According to Rob, the nicest aspect about audiobook publishing is that you don’t have to write or narrate the books yourself. You don’t need any skills or expertise to perform it. You may do this from the comfort of your own home or while traveling across the globe. There isn’t a single item in the inventory. There is no customer service. There won’t be much promotion since Audible, Amazon, iTunes, and others already have billions of consumers shopping for new audiobooks to listen to on their apps and websites. It’s not too saturated. It also replicates.
Rob used to work as an EMT in an ambulance five years ago. He went online to hunt for a way out of the rat race because of early mornings, long hours, poor income, and insane patients. Speaking about rats, one of the patients he treated as an EMT had a rat bite his foot! The man’s diabetes was out of control to the point that he lost sensation in his lower limbs and didn’t even realize it. For the visual, you’re welcome.
Rob found audiobook publishing after some success selling physical things on Amazon. His first effort netted him a few hundred bucks every month. His subsequent attempts all failed terribly. He knew he’d struck it rich on the first try. As a result, he started researching, reverse-engineering, testing, and fine-tuning. He finally cracked the code after years in the trenches. Rob can now produce winners at will. He now has 83 audiobooks that bring in more than six figures every year.
Which niches should you pursue? Rob’s interests include business, weight reduction, psychology, and self-help. Once you’ve decided on a theme, do some research and read some reviews of recent audiobooks in that genre. Determine what your listeners want and don’t want, then tailor your material to meet their needs. Outsource the audiobook’s actual composition, narration, and visual design to competent people with a track record. It’s essential to have crystal clear audio. Turn the audiobook into a paperback book after it’s finished to get even more money out of it. Each listing should be optimized.
It’s all fine. The one aspect of Rob’s presentation that irritated me was how he slipped in a “testimonial” from Shark Tank’s Mr. Wonderful. SMH. Rob. You paid for that mention, and you’re well aware of it. Ironically, the next thing he says is that he’ll only admit people with “great integrity” into his Audiobook Maters group. The procedure will most certainly cost $5,000 or more, but you’ll have to schedule a call to find out.
Here are some of the aspects of the business model that I dislike. For starters, it moves slowly. Two, it is costly. According to the appearances, you might easily spend several thousand dollars on a final product that may or may not sell. Three, whether you use great outsourcers or not, the individuals that create your audiobooks are neither experts or enthusiastic about the subjects. Call me cynical, but aren’t you producing digital scum? Four, if Rob needed 83 audiobooks to reach six figures, how many will you need? There’s a more direct path to six figures.
