Rachel Rofe, a print on demand expert, reveals several super simple mug designs that have all sold for over a hundred thousand dollars. The first is the one shown above. It’s executed flawlessly. At least six figures. “And the issue is, with this and all the other drawings I show you, I want you to see that there’s mom, right?” But you could do a lot of other things,” Rachel explains. “Aunts, uncles, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and the list goes on and on.”
How Does This Compare To Print-On-Demand?
Rachel started another one around Mother’s Day a few years ago. It sold fifty-four thousand dollars immediately away, and many more after that. “Dear Mom,” it said. I appreciate you being my mother. I’d punch my mother in the face and go look for you if I had a different mother. Your Favorite, Love.” Rachel then followed her own advise and ran it again, this time changing the subject to “Dear Dad.” On that version, I made another six figures. Rachel has seen other imitators succeed with the same design.
What’s left? “At least you don’t have unattractive children, no matter how hard life gets.” Also, it sells like hotcakes. You could alter it once more and sell it to fathers, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces. “Dear Dog Dad, thank you for being my daddy,” another winning design says to dog owners. I’d spit on his shoes, chew up his phone, and go look for you if someone else was my father. “Dog Name, Love.” That one went on to sell nearly 30,000 copies.
Not to beat a dead horse, but offering the same design just for “Dog Moms” may double sales. Then there’s the possibility of producing versions for cat parents and moms. “Dear Cat Dad,” for example. Thanks for being my father. I’d piss on his shoes, claw up his face, and go find you if some other man was my father. “Hello, Cat Name.” All of the aforementioned are easy to build, text-based, and free, and you can replicate them for different niches in minutes.
You may do something like the coffee mug above if you want to pay a few dollars to add an image. I’m not sure if this is in support of Trump or mocking him. It’s irrelevant. This isn’t about politics. Selling to a group of enthusiastic buyers is. So, what more do you have in mind that would convert well? Aside from family, dogs, and politics, what else? Sports teams, hobbies, job titles, and maybe even appealing to a particular sense of humor, right? “Of course I talk to myself; occasionally I need expert advise,” or “Sawdust is man glitter.”
With nearly eight billion people on the planet, you can make a lot of money selling mugs on Etsy and Amazon with only a few popular mass market designs. And you will, in fact, be copied. That is, without a doubt, the most significant disadvantage of print on demand. It’s far too easy for folks to take advantage of what works. You’ll be alright if you outmarket them and keep coming up with new listings, Rachel says. There are several opportunities for all of us to sell and profit.
Simply go to Etsy, Amazon, eBay, or somewhere else to check what the top sellers are to get your wheels moving. Take some screenshots or write them down in a TextEdit document. Sip your coffee from your mug as you riff on the examples and create your own variations. “Throwing spaghetti at the wall,” Rachel believes. Go for volume because creating a new listing only takes a few minutes of your time. Check out what sticks. Then branch out into other niches with your winners.
